A “Bacon” approved experience!
I was informed by a friend of the family about a new local restaurant that has created a “sensory” dining room targeted at kids just like my son.
We tried it out yesterday and I was so impressed with the level of thought given to so many small details.
First, there is a totally separate entrance into the dining room. You don’t have to walk through the noisy restaurant to get to this space. You can enter the room directly from the parking lot.
When we entered, I couldn’t believe how quiet the room was – even though it’s part of a very large, active and I’m sure noisy restaurant and bar area. The entire room is painted in calming tones with an outdoor landscape theme.
One-quarter of the room is dedicated to the sensory space complete with bubble water lights, crash pads, legos, blocks, and many tactile boards secured to the walls.
The rest of the room is set up with restaurant tables. No utensils or condiments are on the tables. Menus are kept in a cabinet tucked away in the back of the room.
The entrance to the main restaurant area is a farmhouse type door, that opens in 2 parts. There is a second door handle installed up really high on the top half of the door frame to keep the littles from trying to escape!
The restaurant staff couldn’t be more attentive or accommodating. They were seriously awesome!
The food came out (with the necessary utensils) and it was HOT and delicious! Eric especially loved the soft pretzel breadstick appetizer 🙂
I told one of the staff members that even I felt calmer in there. It felt like our own private restaurant – even though two other families came in while we were dining.
At the end of the dinner, they even presented Eric with a certificate and a “member” card. I thought this was a nice touch especially if you have a loved one who has never been able to go out to a restaurant before – this set-up will allow families to try dining out without being worried about judgment or disturbing others sitting nearby.
The room has a big tree painted on one wall, and they presented us with a puzzle piece and asked us to write our name on it so they can hang it on their “family” tree. It was another special and sweet touch to the overall experience.
If you are local in New Jersey, you have to try them out! It’s Riv’s Hub in Toms River. And they refer to the sensory dining room as “Chase’s friends Zone.” The owner created this space as a result of having a family member (named Chase) who has autism. Apparently, they also have special events like guest musicians who visit the sensory room from time to time. And they also take reservations – which is great so you don’t have to take a chance that a restaurant could make you wait to be seated!!
I thought it was a great experience and we can’t wait to go back!
Even more importantly, Eric asked to visit again next week —even before we paid the bill! That makes it a “Bacon” approved restaurant for sure.
